Crowns and Overlays
Crowns or overlays (partial crowns) are indicated when a filling occupies 50% or more of the tooth. A tooth with such a large filling is very prone to cracking or splitting. A crown or overlay surrounds the tooth and strengthens it. A large filling can act as a wedge, thus weakening the tooth.
Crowns and overlays are used for the following reasons:
- To repair a tooth with a large cavity
- To repair a tooth with a large, weak existing filling
- To replace a crown or overlay that has failed
- To improve cosmetics
Crowns and overlays can be made of three materials:
- Gold
- Porcelain fused to metal (metal underneath with porcelain on top)
- All-porcelain or tooth-colored material
Each material has advantages and disadvantages. If your teeth need the strength or cosmetic improvement a crown or overlay can provide, Dr. Maynard will carefully evaluate your teeth after discussing your concerns, and he will make recommendations based on your situation.
