Dental Fixed Bridges
Fixed bridges are used to replace missing teeth. The advantage of a fixed bridge over a removable partial denture is that it is not removable. It is attached to the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth with crowns or overlays that are cemented permanently. Fixed bridges are esthetically pleasing and appear natural.
However, the disadvantages of a fixed bridge are:
- The teeth on either side of the space must be cut down to receive a crown or overlay.
- Since two or more teeth are connected with a fixed bridge, a problem with one tooth often leads to replacement of the entire bridge.
- Fixed bridges have no support or foundation under the replacement tooth. This means that in a typical bridge replacing one missing tooth, two teeth are supporting the forces normally supported by three teeth.
Dental fixed bridges are a good way to replace missing teeth in the right circumstances; however, because of these limitations, Dr. Maynard will often recommend a dental implant to replace a missing tooth or teeth.
