Tooth Decay

Almost everyone knows about tooth decay. Most of us know that sugar is the main cause of tooth decay. When sugar or carbohydrates come in contact with the bacteria in our mouth, acid is formed. It is this acid that softens the enamel and causes cavities.

Some of the signs that you may have cavities include:

  • Sensitivity to sweets, chewing, or hot and cold
  • Brown-stained areas on your teeth
  • Broken teeth or broken filling

However, you may have cavities and have no symptoms. In fact, the easiest time to fix a cavity is before it hurts. If a tooth is hurting due to tooth decay, it may require more involved treatment such as a root canal.

Prevention Is Best
Of course, the best way to deal with cavities is to prevent them in the first place. Actually we already have the tools necessary to almost completely eliminate cavities. That is why Dr. Maynard and his staff utilize the following measures with all their patients, young, old, and in between:

  • Guidance in proper tooth brushing
  • Guidance in proper flossing
  • Diet counseling
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Sealants

Although we have great materials to fix your teeth, there are no materials as good as your natural teeth. However, when a tooth does decay, Dr. Maynard will check the involved tooth to see how large the cavity is, which tooth is involved, and which part of the tooth is decayed. After a thorough evaluation, he will make a recommendation depending on the situation. A tooth-colored filling, an overlay, or a crown will be used to restore your tooth to maximum strength and original beauty.
