What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a form of treatment that uses an injectable solution to plump areas of the skin and create a smoother appearance. As you age, collagen production lessens, resulting in less elasticity. However, when receiving dermal fillers like Juvéderm, Voluma XC, and Revanesse, the solution helps to fill in the areas plagued by sunken scars, deep wrinkles, and additional sagging. Also, the injection encourages collagen production so that you maintain a more youthful appearance.

Dermal Filler FAQs

If you are considering dermal fillers to embrace a more vibrant facial appearance, there’s a good chance you will have several questions for Dr. Singh. Although deemed a safe and worthwhile method of treatment, you want to make sure that you’re making the right decision. You’re always welcome to call our office to speak to a member of our team, but if you would like to do a bit of your own research first, feel free to review the frequently asked questions below before giving us a call.

Are dermal fillers permanent?

You will discover that most dermal fillers consist of a substance known as hyaluronic acid – a sugar that is naturally occurring in your skin. If this is the type of filler you choose to receive (i.e., Restylane, Juvederm, Belotero), you can opt to reverse the effects with Vitrase – an enzyme that helps to dissolve the hyaluronic acid once it is injected.

The idea of permanency is more about whether the effects can be reversed instead of how long it will last. Sculptra and Radiesse are considered products that will stimulate collagen, so they cannot be reversed or dissolved. However, their results will likely fade in 1-2 years.

No matter which type of filler you choose, you can expect to see beautiful results. Of course, it’s important that you weigh the pros and cons with your cosmetic dentist so that you know what to expect and whether it is the right option for you.

Do dermal fillers have side effects?

You may experience some side effects with dermal fillers. These may include swelling, redness, pain, rash, itching, or bruising; however, it is usually only in a small area near the injection and should only last 1-2 weeks. You may notice that your skin appears red or purple and be somewhat tender for a few days, and you might bleed only slightly following your treatment.

If you notice a lump or mass underneath the skin after receiving dermal fillers, do not panic, as this can occur and will likely resolve the week after treatment. If you notice any usual lightening or darkening of the treated skin, this is also something that can commonly occur.

A skin infection might form at the injection site. If it does, make sure to seek professional care from a doctor. Also, if you develop any of these rare side effects, you may need to contact our office: filler leakage, inflammation as a result of the fillers, movement of the filler from one area to another, blood vessel injury, blindness, and tissue death.

What happens if I stop getting dermal fillers?

It is a belief that stopping dermal fillers will leave your skin looking saggy or wrinkled; however, this is not entirely true. Instead, the effects will begin to wear off, but the area around the injection site will only return to its natural state. Fine lines and less volume will become apparent again but not necessarily worse than when you originally started.

As you age, without the benefits of dermal fillers, you may find that wrinkles and creases begin to deepen and become more visible; however, this is not because of a lack of fillers but instead the normal aging process.

Are dental fillers only for women?

Although it might seem as if women are the only ones who can receive dermal fillers, this is not true. Men, while they may not be as vocal about receiving injections, are great candidates for this type of treatment. Dermal fillers can:

  • Target wrinkles and age lines
  • Restore volume to a hollow face
  • Lift facial tissues
  • Reshape the face to create a sharper jawline or chin
  • Produce a nonsurgical nose job that helps to reshape the nose (with no downtime)
  • Enhance the lips, especially for those with thin lips or who have lines because of smoking
